TREATMENT #2
After having written my first film treatment, I took about a month away from writing anything more about my film, and in that time a lot of my views and ideas changed and developed, so this is my new and refined treatment.
I felt that my initial concept had no value and message, and I wanted to make it a bit deeper and though-provoking. After watching Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ over the Summer, the notion that women are seen as objects by men and are subject to the male gaze still today took my fascination. Originally, I wanted to show the difficulties of a relationship and the effects that both partners have on each other in a relationship. But I decided to go forward, making the faults of the relationship very one sided and show how in some cases women are still taken advantage of a mistreated as they were in the past. I want to create the message that female empowerment.
OVERVIEW:
ACT I
The film begins with a montage: happy moments, capturing laughter and intimacy. The female is presented as someone wit her own passions and aspirations. Through the lighting and vibe of the sequence, it is hinted that this is of the past. Female protagonist is an artist
As the montage develops, voice over is brought in a we hear a build up of happy memories, but suddenly some more violent words, that build up to a crescendo. Cut to black
ACT II
We cut to our female protagonist looking in the mirror, that symbolises the idea of duality, we wonder what has happened - she looks depressed and distressed - far form how she looked at the beginning of the film. The lighting and overall colour grading has changed. She is a ripped uo picture form the past. She looks at it and a tear drops on to the paper, remember what they once were… we question if the relationship ended up Ona break up.
The door is open and we hear a slam. Sonny (our male protagonist enters and makes some comments about the way she looks and what she is doing
(This bit is taken from slap)
After he has left, she looks in the mirror again and she picks up a paint brush, she begins to paint on the mirror.
ACT III
At this point she embarks on a journey of self discovery - she paints. We watch a montage in which she is centred around female attention and love - she spends time with her friends. Every so often the camera cuts to example a photoframe of him, but after a close up on her face and a deep breath we move on, these moments get rarer throughout the montage, showing that he is disappearing from her life
This montage is also laced with snippets of her painting - we watch as it comes together.
Turning point - art exhibition showcasing her work -
Close up of the leaflet showcasing her work. And we pan up and dolly foward through the doors towards her exhibiton
Somebody walks in front of the painting and stops and looks at it. - we are allowed to look in this moment.
A male figure walks into the frame and stands before it. Ava walks in with a friend - they watch it next to the man.
Match on action as sonny looks from the work to Ava - his facial expression is disconcerting,
Breaking the fourth wall - the friend sees him but Ava does not. When Ava notices her friend entranced by the man behind her - she turns around,
Shot reverse shot of Ava looking at Sonny.
“Ave, ave”
Cut to black.
Closing titles.
